Tidal Lagoon Power has announced its plans for a 14-mile tidal lagoon to be constructed off the coast of Cardiff and extending to Newport.
The lagoon, part of a series of similar government-backed green energy programmes, is so efficient that it could potentially generate enough power for every home in Wales in a year.
Although the first stages of preparation have begun, the full application likely won’t be submitted for another two years, which, if successful, will begin operation in 2022.
Set to cost anywhere up to £6 billion, the project will nonetheless create cheaper electricity, said to be on par with the forthcoming Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant.
This is only part of a wider plan by the tidal company, who wants to erect similar projects in four other locations, in addition to the currently in-development Swansea Bay.
