Marine Engineer Fijen Discusses Tidal

Ton Fijen, an experienced engineer who has been working in marine and coastal engineering for over 30 years, has recently been answering questions from The Engineer Magazine regarding the benefits and challenges associated with tidal energy.

In the interview, Fijen tackles issues such as doubling up on power by placing wind turbines on the lagoon walls, but says that by avoiding this seemingly obvious endeavour, it facilitates non-energy based opportunities that will bring people closer to the energy production sector.

Sometimes overlooked issues such as silt build-up and marine growth becoming attached to turbine blades is also discussed, along with the future of tidal lagoon projects like the Wyre Eco-THEP (Tidal Hydro Energy Plant) project.
